A woman who unexpectedly crossed paths with Will Young while out for the day with her mother has admitted she was left disappointed, claiming the Pop Idol star was not quite how he appeared on screen.

Fans have long been curious about what their favourite celebrities are really like away from the cameras — and one Digital Spy forum has once again opened the floodgates for personal encounters to be shared.

The fan admitted they had high expectations after seeing him on screen on the ITV talent contest years before, admitting they thought he was 'gorgeous'

Under a discussion titled “nice and not very nice celebrities who you have met”, one contributor opened up about her experience meeting Will, now 46, who rose to fame after winning the first series of Pop Idol.

‘I Was a Huge Fan — And It Caught Me Off Guard’

The star added that his anxiety can be 'isolating' at times, and while he's sought solace in gardening, he has also relied on 'thought-blocking' to manage it

The unnamed woman admitted she had high expectations, having watched Will on television years earlier and describing him at the time as “gorgeous”.

However, she said the encounter — which took place in 2008 — did not unfold as she had hoped.

“He was dismissive and pushed my mum out of the way,” she wrote.

The anonymous fan admitted she had not held the meeting against Will and presumed he was having a 'bad day'

She went on to explain that Will would not meet fans unless his security guard was present to line people up, despite there being only a small number waiting.

“He was nice to talk to once we actually got to meet him,” she added,
“And he has the most gorgeous smile ever. It was just his attitude beforehand that wasn’t so nice.”

‘I Hoped He Was Just Having a Bad Day’

Despite her disappointment, the fan was careful not to condemn the singer outright.

“As a huge fan, it really disappointed me,” she admitted.
“But I’m hoping he was just having a bad day, and I haven’t held it against him.”

Her comments sparked a mixed reaction from others on the forum, with several users rushing to defend the star.

One person wrote that Will was among the nicest celebrities they had ever met, while another recalled an encounter in Manchester, describing him as “lovely and funny”.

“He often blushed and just seemed shy over nothing,” another fan added.

Anxiety, PTSD — And Life Off Camera

The discussion comes amid Will’s own candid admissions about his mental health struggles.

Earlier this year, the singer revealed that he has battled crippling anxiety, at times struggling to leave the house and even suffering panic attacks during everyday interactions — including one while speaking to his postwoman.

Will has previously shared that he has been diagnosed with complex PTSD and has undergone extensive therapy to manage his symptoms.

“I’ve been having a difficult time with my emotions,” he explained on the Dig It podcast with Jo Whiley and Zoe Ball.
“But I think it’s really important to be transparent about it.”

He described how his anxiety often presents physically rather than mentally, leading to intense bodily reactions that feel difficult to explain or control.

‘I’m Confronting Things Now’

Will said there were periods when he would spend days in bed, overwhelmed by emotion, but added that therapy has helped him confront long-stored trauma.

“I used to be a lot more dissociated,” he said.
“I’m not now — I’m actually facing things.”

The performer has previously spoken about suffering panic attacks “24 hours a day” at one point in his life, and despite medical advice, went on to compete in Strictly Come Dancing in 2016.

Fame, Expectations — And Reality

Will shot to fame after winning Pop Idol in 2002, but has since admitted that the backlash following the show left him feeling unwelcome in the music industry for a time.

As the online debate shows, brief encounters can leave lasting impressions — both positive and negative — and raise ongoing questions about how much of a celebrity’s public persona truly reflects who they are behind the scenes.
