Tragedy at Brighton Beach: Identities of Three Sisters Revealed Alongside Heartbreaking Tribute from FatherPolice at the scene on May 13, shortly after the sisters' bodies had been pulled from the water

The three women whose bodies were recovered from the sea off Brighton beach in mid-May have officially been identified as sisters. The devastating loss of three daughters in the prime of their lives has left an “unbearable” void for their family and sent shockwaves across the UK.

According to Sussex Police, the victims were named as Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walter, 32, and Rebecca Walter, 31. The sisters, who lived in Uxbridge, west London, were visiting the East Sussex seaside resort when the tragedy unfolded.

The incident occurred at around 5:45 AM on Wednesday, May 13, when emergency services received a welfare concern report regarding people in the water near the Black Rock car park area on Madeira Drive. A major search and rescue operation was launched, involving an HM Coastguard helicopter and multiple Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboats. Tragically, miracles did not materialize, and the sisters’ bodies were pulled from the water shortly after.

A Father’s Unbearable Grief

Through Sussex Police, their devastated father, Joseph, released a deeply emotional statement, describing a grief that words cannot heal.

‘Today, with a heart full of sorrow and love, I pay tribute to my beloved daughters – Jane, Christina, and Becky – whose lives ended so tragically far too soon,’ Joseph shared. ‘No words can truly describe the pain of losing three daughters in the prime of their lives. Jane, Christina, and Becky were more than daughters to me; they were my joy, my strength, and the beautiful light that filled our family with happiness and love.’

Paying individual tribute to each of his girls, the grieving father added:

‘Jane, your strength and loving spirit will never be forgotten. Christina, your kindness and beautiful heart touched so many lives. Becky, your warmth and joyful soul brought happiness wherever you went.’

The Hidden Danger Beneath the Waves: The Coastguard’s Theory

While detectives have not yet established exactly how the women died—and there is no evidence to suggest criminality or third-party involvement—the Coastguard is examining a theory related to the treacherous underwater terrain of the beach.

A Coastguard source revealed that the shoreline off Brighton Beach features a steep, sudden drop into deep water that catches many people off guard.

  • The Sudden Drop-Off: “You don’t have to go far out at all before there’s a big drop-off and you go from knee-high water to chest-high water,” the source explained.

  • The Deadly Dynamics: Authorities theorize that at least one of the sisters may have waded out into the sea for a paddle and stumbled off a hidden shingle shelf into deep water.

  • The Struggle: Swimmers can be rapidly pulled out of their depth by the backwash. Combined with shifting pebbles underfoot and crashing waves, it becomes incredibly difficult to maintain balance or climb back up the underwater slope to safety. It is highly possible that the other sisters attempted a rescue and were subsequently caught in the same perilous conditions.Coronavirus Brighton: Beach empties after morning warning ...

The Investigation Continues

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays, Divisional Commander for Brighton and Hove, stated that police will “leave no stone unturned” to understand the exact sequence of events that led to that Wednesday morning’s tragedy.

Officers are currently:

  • Reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage.

  • Conducting door-to-door inquiries at local properties and businesses along the seafront.

Authorities are issuing an urgent appeal to the public, particularly asking anyone who may have seen the three women around the Madeira Drive area between 10:00 PM on Tuesday, May 12, and 5:30 AM on Wednesday, May 13, to come forward with information.

Local MPs, including Chris Ward, echoed this sentiment, describing the news as “deeply tragic” while thanking the emergency services for their swift response and tireless work under difficult circumstances.
