Ian Huntley’s daughter has spoken publicly following a violent prison attack that has left the Soham murderer fighting for his life. Samantha Bryan, 27, said she felt a sense of relief upon learning that her father had been critically injured after being struck over the head with a metal pole by another inmate. Huntley, 52, is currently receiving hospital treatment and was reportedly given only a five per cent chance of survival. He remains in critical condition.

Samantha did not hide her feelings when reacting to the news. She said she initially believed her father had died and became emotional upon hearing about the attack. However, she described her tears as stemming from what she called an “overwhelming sense of relief.” According to her, being the daughter of a man responsible for the murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002 has weighed heavily on her throughout her life. She explained that the connection to Huntley has felt like a constant burden, and she admitted that part of her felt she could finally breathe when she thought he might be gone. In her words, if he were to die, the burden she has carried would die with him.
Samantha also drew comparisons between Huntley and some of Britain’s most notorious killers, placing him in the same category as figures such as the Yorkshire Ripper and Fred and Rose West. Her comments reflected the deep anger and shame she has lived with since discovering the truth about her biological father.
She first learned that Huntley was her father when she was just 14 years old. At the time, she was working on a school crime project and came across a pixelated photograph of herself and her mother connected to media coverage of Huntley. Confused and distressed, she confronted her mother, Katie, who then revealed the truth. Katie told her daughter that she had been in a relationship with Huntley when she was 15 years old. She became pregnant at 16 before eventually fleeing what she described as his brutality.
Recalling the moment she heard about the recent prison attack, Samantha said her mother called to inform her that a friend had been in touch with the news that Huntley had suffered a severe assault and was fighting for his life. The information had an immediate and powerful emotional impact on her. She said she became very emotional and expressed the belief that there is a “special place in hell” waiting for him.

Katie, now 45, also shared her reaction. She stated that she believes Huntley received what he deserved and expressed no sympathy for his condition. She said she hoped he would “burn in hell” and even remarked that she would like to shake the hand of the man responsible for the attack.
Samantha, who works as a beautician in Cleethorpes, explained that being Huntley’s child has affected many aspects of her life. She described the stigma and emotional weight of carrying his name and bloodline, saying that it has shaped her experiences and identity in difficult ways. The knowledge of her biological connection to such crimes has remained a source of pain and internal conflict.
This latest incident marks the third serious attack on Huntley during his time in prison. In 2010, he survived an assault in which his throat was cut, requiring 21 stitches. Eight years later, he claimed that another inmate had again attempted to cut his throat. The repeated attacks highlight the danger he faces behind bars due to the nature of his crimes.
The main suspect in the most recent assault is Anthony Russell, 43. Reports suggest that as he was led away in handcuffs, he allegedly claimed, “I’ve killed him,” after Huntley was discovered lying in a pool of blood. However, police have not officially confirmed Russell’s identity as the attacker, and investigations remain ongoing.
Russell himself was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to a whole-life order for a series of brutal crimes committed in 2020 near Leamington Spa. He was found guilty of murdering Julie Williams and her son David, as well as the rape and murder of Nicole McGregor, who was pregnant at the time. His crimes were described as a week-long rampage that shocked the community.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack on Huntley. While Huntley remains in critical condition in hospital, the incident has once again brought public attention to the Soham murders and their long-lasting impact—not only on the victims’ families but also on those connected to the perpetrator. For Samantha Bryan, the news has reopened painful memories and underscored the emotional burden she says she has carried since learning the identity of her father.
