Phoenix Nights Star Justin Moorhouse Announces the Devastating Loss of His Son, Barney
Phoenix Nights actor and comedian Justin Moorhouse has shared the heartbreaking news that his son, Barney, has passed away — a loss that has sent shockwaves through the comedy world and beyond.
Confirming the tragedy in an emotional social media statement, the Coronation Street star described Barney as the “sweetest, kindest soul”, revealing that the family is struggling to come to terms with an unimaginable grief.
Posting on Instagram, the 55-year-old spoke with raw honesty about the pain now facing those who loved his son most.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts I have to tell you our beautiful boy Barney has passed away,” Justin wrote.
“Me, his mum and step mum, his sister, cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents and his gorgeous friends are beside ourselves with grief.”
In one of the most moving parts of his tribute, Justin shared that Barney passed peacefully in his sleep — a detail that only deepened the heartbreak of the announcement.
“He was so happy, content and excited about the future,” he said.
“The sweetest, kindest soul. He just went to sleep and didn’t wake up.”
Trying to find strength in the depth of his loss, Justin added that love is now the family’s only anchor.
“I can’t imagine how the next days and weeks will unfold, but I know we are able to cope — love always helps.
I am him and he is me.
Sleep tight, Barney. Dad x.”
He ended his message by asking for compassion and understanding as the family navigates the days ahead.
Tributes Pour In From the Comedy World
Following the announcement, messages of love and support flooded in from friends, colleagues and fellow comedians.
John Bishop was among the first to pay tribute, writing:
“Justin, this is so heartbreaking. I remember the kind, fun little boy who grew to be a man to be proud of.
There are no words. All of our love goes out to all of you at this time.”
Actor Steve Evets, who starred alongside Justin in Looking for Eric, also shared his condolences:
“Justin, my heart goes out to you and all your family and friends of Barney.
I can never imagine the grief you all must be in right now.
My words may be meaningless, but please take my best wishes at this terrible loss.”
A Career That Brought Laughter to Millions
Justin Moorhouse is best known for his role as Young Kenny in Peter Kay’s iconic Channel 4 sitcom Phoenix Nights, which first aired in 2001. His character became unforgettable — particularly in a much-loved episode where Kenny spends days with his face painted like a tiger after a disastrous family fun day.
Beyond Phoenix Nights, Justin built a respected career across television, film, radio and theatre. He appeared alongside football legend Eric Cantona in the acclaimed film Looking for Eric, starred at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre in Zack, and played Dean Upton on Coronation Street between 2014 and 2015.
He has also featured on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Celebrity Mastermind, Still Open All Hours, and created his own BBC Radio 4 series, Everyone Quite Likes Justin.
Today, however, accolades and achievements fade beside the pain of a father mourning his child.
As tributes continue to pour in, fans and colleagues alike are united in grief — and in respect — for a family facing the most profound loss imaginable.
