Kate Garraway has faced more than her share of heartbreak. After losing her beloved husband Derek Draper earlier this year, she was forced to make one of the hardest decisions of her life — selling the £1.7 million Georgian townhouse in Islington to help cover the crushing £800,000 debt she had built up during his long-term care.
What she didn’t know — until now — was that the buyer was someone far closer than she could’ve ever imagined.
“She had no idea until now,” a close source revealed. “The £1.7 million house she was forced to sell to cover Derek’s care debt… was secretly bought by her new partner. When she found out, she broke down in tears.”
Kate had purchased the property with Derek back in 2004 for £550,000. Though its value had tripled, mounting debts and ongoing care expenses — reportedly £16,000 a month — forced her into a financial corner. Her ITV salary alone couldn’t carry the weight, and she faced selling either the Islington property or their family home in Muswell Hill, which had been adapted with a hospital bed and lift for Derek’s needs.
Ultimately, it was the Islington home that had to go — or so she thought.
As the sale closed, Kate remained unaware that the buyer — working discreetly through a third party — was her current boyfriend, who wanted to preserve a piece of her past while investing in her future.
“Everyone is overjoyed, not just because she’s found love again — but because this man quietly stepped in to protect her and the kids, asking for nothing in return.”
Sources close to the family say his words brought Kate and her children to tears:
“We may have lost Derek, but we haven’t lost each other. You still have a future, and I’m here with you every step of the way.”
Kate had been open about the emotional and financial toll Derek’s illness took on their lives. His death on January 3 at age 56 followed years of complications from COVID-19, which left him in a coma, wheelchair-bound, and dependent on around-the-clock care.
Now, in the midst of grieving and healing, Kate has found unexpected strength and support from someone who didn’t just love her — he acted on that love in the quietest, most profound way.
“He didn’t do it for praise. He did it because he saw how much pain we were in and just wanted to give us peace.”
