Jeremy Clarkson has faced another frightening twist in a year already defined by medical emergencies. The beloved Clarkson’s Farm presenter was unexpectedly admitted to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on October 5 after becoming suddenly “very unwell,” just months after the heart surgery that doctors said saved his life.
Now 65, Clarkson has spent much of this year confronting the fragility of his own health. In his typically unfiltered Sunday Times column, he revealed that the latest hospital stay involved a form of treatment so excruciating that even he — the man famed for enduring chaos with humour — struggled to describe it.
“The treatment was Defcon 1 painful,” he wrote. “They basically had to scrape me off the ceiling with a spatula afterward.”
The agony was so intense that he was kept overnight for observation.
But in true Clarkson fashion, he refused to disclose exactly what put him there. “I’m not telling you what was wrong,” he insisted. “It’s none of your business.”
What he did share, however, was a rare moment of tenderness. The father-of-three spoke with deep gratitude for the NHS team who cared for him, praising their kindness, precision and patience.
“Everyone I met was kind. Everything was spotless. Lunch was kids’ food — brilliant. And they even made me better. I’m eternally grateful.”
A Reminder of How Close He Came Earlier This Year
The incident brought back haunting memories of the moment in May when Clarkson was rushed to A&E after experiencing alarming symptoms: cold sweats, tingling hands and a crushing pressure across his chest. Doctors discovered one of his arteries was fully blocked and another was close behind. Emergency surgery to insert two stents prevented what they later said could have been a fatal heart attack.
“I was only days from death,” Clarkson admitted at the time — a stark warning he has not forgotten.
The TV icon has since overhauled his lifestyle, even trying weight-loss medications Ozempic and Mounjaro in an effort to safeguard his heart.
A Year of Hard Lessons — and Public Honesty
Two hospital admissions, one life-threatening heart emergency, and now a mysterious illness requiring agonising treatment — Jeremy Clarkson’s health journey this year has been raw, emotional and unsettling. Yet his willingness to speak candidly about it has offered fans a rare glimpse behind the bravado.
And though he once built a career on roaring engines and bravado, it is his quiet gratitude and hard-won resilience that have struck the deepest chord.
For now, Clarkson is back home — bruised, exhausted, and undeniably changed — but still fighting. And still talking.
